London Bridge is the fourth busiest station in the country, bringing approximately 16,000 passengers into the city every hour. The regeneration of the station saw improved services through the introduction of new platforms and a new concourse. The removal of the existing train shed roof and support columns was a critical part of the redesign. As a main transport link into the city, it was essential that disruption to the operation of the railway and the general public was kept to a minimum.
RDG designed a waterproof and impact resistant access and protection deck, positioned between the soffit of the existing roof structure and the operational railway below. The deck provided weather protection, access and debris collection from the removal of 1350 tonnes of steel, wrought and cast iron. The deck was assembled on bespoke loading gantries positioned at both the country and London end of the station. Elements of the deck were then launched from the gantries to provide 100% coverage to the entire station.
Once the project was completed the access and protection deck was incrementally dismantled by carrying out the reverse process used for installation. Through careful design and planning, taking into account Safety by Design, the entire operation was carried out in the record time of 12 months.
